6D5N Orangutan Lake Toba Tour

6D5N Orangutan Lake Toba Tour – Lake Toba is located in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a large natural crater lake formed by super volcanic eruption some ages back. The lake is the largest amongst all in the entire South East Asia and the deepest in the world. Clear blue water, surrounded by large mountains bundled with pleasant climate makes Toba a popular tourist attraction in Indonesia. Tourists and backpackers, who are on a look out for tranquillity & serenity after a hectic tour, should definitely come here to get completely immersed in the nature. With a wide range of activities to be explored, Lake Toba can easily become a mini holiday.

The best way to look around is through a motorbike which will make the commute comfortable and enjoyable. The most popular thing to discover is the ancient Batak Village. It’s interesting to know about their rituals and culture. A local batak guy can take you around the place. You can also visit the Batak museum to know more. Visit the hot springs located on the western side of the island.

The water here is quite hot so swimming here is not recommended. The guide can take you up the hills to view the source of hot springs. The top view of Lake Toba is absolutely stunning. In case you want to do something exciting you can try your hand fishing in Lake Toba with the help of a local fisherman. You can also capture wonderful shots and selfies around the waterfalls which are close to the lake. With many other things to explore, Lake Toba offers an enriching and refreshing break for its tourists.

The Sumatran Orangutan is critically endangered, and there are less than 15,000 left in the wild. This is because their habitats are being destroyed on a large scale to make way for palm oil plantations. The total number of Sumatran Orangutans has decreased by 80% in the last 75 years, and sadly it’s expected to keep shrinking, with extinction on the horizon unless major changes are made in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Orangutans are a protected species in Indonesia, but government enforcement is weak even when the animals are killed illegally. Palm oil farming has taken priority because it brings more value to the economy. Indonesia is still a relatively poor country, and that’s especially true in Sumatra where tourism isn’t a big player yet, so money speaks. And unfortunately that continues to motivate palm oil farming, illegal logging, the illegal wildlife trade, etc. Hopefully the tourist money flowing into places like Bukit Lawang will help incentivize the proper protection of these animals so we can keep enjoying them in the future.

DAY 1 : KUALANAMU – BUKIT LAWANG

Today you arrive in Kualanamu airport Medan. Then you drive about 4 hours to Bukit Lawang, a small tourist village situated on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. And the park is one of the largest national park in the world containing over 800,000 ha of virgin rainforest and home to an impressive number of mammal species like tigers, Orangutans, gibbons, elephants and rhino’s. Enroute stop at oilpalm plantation and local market. Arrival in Bukit Lawang, free to relax. Enjoy the scenery from the veranda of your hotel room.

DAY 2 : BUKIT LAWANG – BERASTAGI

First we bring you to the feeding platform of orangutans. The platform was built to help the orangutans that have been released to the wild after their rehabilitation. As they are semi-wild, they are sometimes having trouble finding food on their own in the wild. Then they can come to the feeding platform for some milk and bananas. Wild orangutan occasionally come to the platform too. So the feeding platform is meant as the first place for the orangutans come to for help rather than plantations or village where conflicts can occur. When the orangutans are getting enough food on their own, they will not come to the platform because the food they find in the wild is more exciting than just milk and bananas! So although it is a marvelous sight to see the orangutans at the platform, it is also good news when they do not show up, as this means they are surviving well in the wild without help.
